Special honor for Holy Cross girls hoop coach Lombardo

Another sad farewell to a city hoop star

BY JOE PALLADINO
We grow weary of saying farewell.
On Wednesday evening, the city had a chance to say goodbye to Tony Hanson, the former Holy Cross High and UConn basketball star — oh why stop there, just say it, legend — who died last November at age 63.
A beautiful celebration of Hanson’s life was hosted at Holy Cross, and sadly, you didn’t show up. There were stories, a video, a slideshow, with anecdotes from former city stars, and another legend, former UConn coach Dee Rowe.
What does it take to get people off their butts in this town? If you won’t come out for Hanson, what it would it take to get you out the door?
It is on that note that we honor the passing of another city basketball star, the great Shellie Ferguson, who died last month in Florida at age 75.
The casual fan will not recognize the name, but Shellie Ferguson was a Wilby High star in what was the city’s golden age of scholastic basketball.
Ferguson was a Wilby star alongside another Wildcats great, Bobby Brown, no, not the Crosby Bob Brown, the Wilby Bobby Brown.
Ferguson and Brown, a couple of 6-foot-5 power forwards before the position was defined, were All-City and All-NVL stars in 1961. Wilby was the only school that placed two players on each team. Brown and Ferguson both averaged 20 ppg.
The other all stars were Reggie Maton of Crosby and Joe Ciriello of Croft. The player who rounded out the roster was that Sacred Heart kid named Billy Finn, who was, at the time, this city’s greatest player.
This wasn’t just the Finn era. It was the Billy Rado, Marty Sweeney, Carl Spencer, Butch Moore and Bobby Brown era. In the best era of all, Ferguson was among the best.
If you ever met Shellie then you met one of the best men of all, too. A UConn grad, he was a teacher and coach at Watertown High and a professor at Mattatuck Community College. Then he carved out a career in finance in Connecticut and Florida.
I used any excuse to call Shellie in Florida, and on one glorious occasion when Ferguson was home from Florida and Brown was back from Ohio, they invited me to lunch along with Joe Parisi and Tony Farese, great Wilby men all.
It was ever engaging to hear Shellie talk about his childhood friend and future NFL Hall of Fame member Floyd Little, when they staked out a spot on the Waterbury Green and shined shoes for fun and profit.
When Bobby Brown died in 2015, Ferguson spoke profoundly about his best friend. I looked back at that conversation and realized that what Shellie said about Bobby then, we can say about Shellie now. Ferguson talked eloquently about how memory fades, and heroes are forgotten.
“I think that is true of all generations,” Shellie said four years ago. “Kids today, everyone, loses some of that memory. People don’t know Billy Finn today, except for the award. They don’t know how he dominated and they don’t know about his greatness.
“They don’t remember Carl Spencer or Marty Sweeney,” Ferguson continued. “These are the guys who made Waterbury history. It is sad that we don’t have video of Bobby. The modern players don’t know him. He played in the armory, which was our Mecca of basketball. It had an atmosphere that you can’t replicate today, and Bobby was the best there. Anything you could ask of a basketball player, he could do. Those who knew him, those who were blessed to play with him or against him, saw that greatness.”
Those were the words Ferguson offered up when his friend passed away. Shellie, I hope you don’t mind, but we now offer up those words for you.
A funeral service for Ferguson is Saturday at Hope Church of Christ in Hollywood, Fla. If you live in Florida, do us a good deed and say goodbye to Shellie. Calling hours are 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service in Waterbury will be announced.
