NVL looks to get more boys playing tennis

By JOE PALLADINO

For fans of NVL boys tennis, and you know who you are, be aware of a seismic change this season in how a match is scored. And by the way, it’s about time.

This new system will not only change how a match is scored, but also how a lineup is set, and it might provide more reward for a team deeper in talent. Here is what has changed:

Before: A boys match was decided by an eight-game pro set.

Now: A match is decided by the best two out of three six-game sets, just like a pro match. The third set is not a full set, but a 10-point tiebreak.

This brings the NVL boys in line with match scoring across the state. The girls have not changed a thing.

“The support for this has been building the past few years with the coaches,” said Waterbury Career athletic director Ryan McDonald, who oversees NVL boys tennis. “It brings the regular season format in line with postseason tournaments.”

NVL tennis previews

There is another significant change: Previously, a match consisted of six singles and three doubles matches, and a player could play one singles match and one doubles. A team needed six players to complete a lineup, and a star player could dominate two matches for his team.

Now, teams play three singles matches and two doubles, and a player competes in only one match, singles or doubles, but not both. Now a full lineup needs seven players.

“It does allow another player to be involved in a match, and may create more opportunities for ghost matches with players not in the top seven,” McDonald said, “so you have more kids playing tennis.”

A ghost match is a non-scoring match. At Woodland Regional, for example, a school with six tennis courts, coaches can get all five varsity matches on court and still have a court open for a ghost match, or maybe more if other matches end quickly.

Instead of sitting around wrapped in blankets, more kids will play tennis.

The NVL girls have not gone in for this new scoring stuff.

“The girls coaches do not have any interest in changing their format,” said Woodland athletic director Brian Fell, who directs the NVL girls. “What they currently have in place seems to work for everyone, so I do not see any changes in the foreseeable future.”

Fell is only a partial fan of the new boys format.

“I do like the fact that singles and doubles players must now be unique,” Fell said. “It forces teams to be more well rounded.”

True enough, and the girls already get more kids on court, with four singles players, six doubles, for 10 over all. The girls play singles or doubles, but not both. No, the girls need not change a thing.

Except, the scoring perhaps?

“I prefer pro sets on a high school level,” Fell countered. “In my opinion, it is more exciting than best of three standard sets.”

Either way, you are now primed for a new season of NVL tennis.
