WATERBURY — A benefit of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook is the opportunity to see scholastic highlights from games around Connecticut. This past weekend there were many rivalry games and the video clips showed us wonderful highlights, packed gymnasiums, and raucous student cheering sections.
But not from local games. Superb games, like the frantic Kennedy win at Holy Cross last week, or the overtime thriller between Crosby and Kennedy last Friday, were poorly attended. But worse, student body attendance was atrocious.
With few exceptions, city high school students are a major no-show at city games this season, even though game after game has been sensational.
Tonight, with Holy Cross at Sacred Heart you can predict a sellout, and, the rival fan groups will go at each other aggressively. Will we see that at other city games this week, like Wilby-Kennedy, Wilby-Holy Cross, or Crosby-Sacred Heart? Probably not.
