Chase Collegiate’s Stephen Behr

BY MARK JAFFEE

After 34 seasons and 479 wins, Ray Behr has officially stepped down as baseball coach at Chase Collegiate. But the Behr name will remain on the Highlanders’ diamond this season.
Steve Behr, Ray’s son, has taken over the role. Steve has been coaching the Highlanders’ volleyball team for four years and assisted his dad with the baseball team in recent years.
Although he had already retired from teaching, Ray had originally planned to coach this spring. But after the opener was rained out, he felt he couldn’t commit to it like he should and has always done.
“So my son has stepped in,” said Ray. “I told the school and that was it.”
Steve Behr, 26, a 2008 Chase graduate, is completing his teaching certification in physical education at Southern Connecticut State University. A 2012 UConn graduate, Behr is student teaching at Wolcott High until May 6.
Behr is not new to the diamond at Chase. In recent years, he’s coached first base. Last year, he filled in for three games for his dad.
“Having played for him and coached with him, I’ve got to see how my dad interacts with his players,” Behr said. “I was lucky enough to learn all of the fundamentals from him and I hope to pass them along to my players. I think it will be easy to step in and do all of the responsibilities a head coach has. I will have high expectations for myself and my players.”
Being a former catcher, like his dad, will be useful in dealing with pitchers.
“That helped me be a leader on the field and that will help me now,” he said. “It will be fun being down the third base line, giving out signs and leading the huddles.”
Behr will make his debut Saturday at home against Marianapolis Prep.
Beyond this season, Behr is unsure of his coaching status, depending on where he may lock up a teaching job.
“I love being at Chase and would welcome any opportunity to allow me to do that,” he said. “I would want to stay involved here.”

Waterbury’s field of dreams no longer a nightmare

By JOE PALLADINO

WATERBURY — Go ahead, blink, rub your eyes, splash water on your face, then say: “We’re not in Kansas anymore.” We are not. We are in Waterbury, where Municipal Stadium has been recalled to life. For real. We got it done.

The old gray lady on Watertown Avenue, the rotting, crumbling eyesore that would not go away, is now sleek, shiny and ready for games again.

Many words were spoken in the long debate about what was to be done. Some were angry, a few were shouted, but now there are only two words left to say: Play ball.
