With tough football injury behind him, Oxford’s Kica thrives on wrestling mat

OXFORD — Three months ago, Oxford High junior Adem Kica’s athletic future was hanging in the balance after an injury on the football field.

But thanks to some time, a lot of healing and a little bit of luck, Kica has since returned to action — in a sport in which he had never previously competed — wrestling.

By MARK JAFFEE

Heeding the advice of his friend and football teammate Jason Madden and assistant football coach John Bogart, who also is on head coach Joe DiMartino’s wrestling staff, Kica joined the squad.

Now, since breaking his fibula and injuring his ankle while making a tackle against Naugatuck in Week 5 of the 2019 football season, the right offensive guard and middle linebacker has rebounded to help the Wolverines to a 13-1 record.

Their only loss came against Northwestern.

Individually, Kica is 12-2 in the 195-pound weight category. His only losses came against wrestlers from Notre Dame-Fairfield and Thomaston-Holy Cross.

“I tried to fill a gap, chased the ball carrier down to make the tackle and my body went one way and my leg went the other,” he said. “I felt a sharp pain. On the field, our athletic trainer (Chelsea Searles of Pysical Therapy for Life in Southbury) thought it was broken, but wasn’t 100% sure until she got me back into the locker room. She took really good care of me.”

The next day, Kica went to the hospital for X-rays to confirm that his season was over.

“I was in shock and in denial,” said Kica. “I said to myself, ‘Wow’ I was in the midst of a great season and it ended in the blink of an eye.”

Luckily, Kica’s injuries didn’t require surgery.

“It feels good to be back competing,” said Kica, two days after the Wolverines’ football banquet last Sunday. “It took a while to get back in the swing of things. I was nervous obviously before our first match because I never wrestled before. I was always interested in the sport, but football has been my No. 1 sport and weightlifting a close second. Coach Bogart really helped me (with wrestling techniques). I’ve known him my whole life. I started taking to the sport.”

Kica won his first match against Derby and captured an individual title at the Derby Invitational to jump-start his wrestling career and boost his confidence.

“I’m such a competitive person and always try my best,” said Kica. “I’m really looking forward to the rest of the regular season and the Berkshire Valley Tournament.”

The Berkshire Valley wrestling tournament is Feb. 15 at Thomaston High.

Also an outfielder on the baseball team, Kica said he will try to earn a starting spot on a deep Wolverines’ squad.

“I’m just glad to be back being able to do something I love,” said Kica.

And the appreciation he has for being healthy is even more profound.

Mega-win streaks never easy … just ask a coach who had one

Winning streaks don’t just happen. They are the product of talent, preparation and a little bit of luck.

By STEVE BARLOW

That’s according to Fred Williams, the longtime Northwestern High girls basketball coach, whose Highlanders won 142 Berkshire League games in a row, starting in 1986 and ending in a league tournament loss to Thomaston in 1993.

“No. 1, you’ve got to have the personnel. Without the talent, the athletes, that streak would not have happened,” said Williams.

Sacred Heart puts its boys basketball win streak of 116 straight NVL games on the line Friday night against Crosby

Plus, the girls who starred for him had the benefit of excellent coaching at the lower levels that honed their skills. And he added, don’t overlook that there were “games we could’ve lost if the ball bounced the wrong way.”

Streaks are a bit of a double-edged sword. Long winning streaks give teams an aura of invincibility.

“We could almost win because of history,” Williams noted. “Teams were defeated almost before they hit the floor.”

But on the flip side, any time an opponent had a shot at beating them, the pressure would naturally mount on the Highlanders.

“You don’t want to be the ones who stop the streak,” Williams said. “Even if the streak is only 15, 20 games, you don’t want to be the one who stops the streak.”

Here are some other notable streaks by area teams:

Cheshire girls swimming: 281 straight dual-meet victories, 1986-2011.

Nonnewaug girls outdoor track: 163 straight dual-meet victories, 1996-2011.

Northwestern girls basketball: 142 straight Berkshire League victories, 1986-93.

Torrington boys cross country: 110 straight dual-meet victories, 1972-78.

Naugatuck girls basketball: 105 straight Naugatuck Valley League victories, 1994-99.

Ansonia football: 95 straight NVL victories, 2012-present.

Naugatuck baseball: 64 straight victories, 1970-72.

Cheshire football: 49 straight victories, 1991-96.

On line in city as Bulldogs visit Hearts: Streak, milestone … and NVL control

By KEVIN ROBERTS

There’s a lot riding on the second meeting between the Sacred Heart and Crosby boys basketball teams today.

The Hearts are 11-0 in the NVL and overall, and come into the game with a 116-game winning streak against league opponents. The Bulldogs are 9-1 in the NVL, 9-3 overall, and have won five straight games since a 74-63 home loss to the Hearts on Jan. 10.

On a personal note, longtime Crosby leader Nick Augelli will reach 700 career wins with his next victory.

Talk to Sacred Heart coach Jon Carroll, and he hopes the streak and the buzz over Augelli going for 700 wins brings a big crowd to Alumni Hall for the 7 p.m. tip.

“I hope it causes a buzz and they pack the place,” Carroll said after Monday’s win over Weaver. “Nick and I talk about it before games, that people just don’t show up for high school games. I think that The Palace was maybe half-full the last time we played, and that was a great high school basketball game.”

Carroll continued: “If it causes people to come out … if it’s the Sacred Heart streak and Nick’s 700th, and it’s a great night in the city, then listen, I’m all for it. Let’s make it packed. It’s two good teams and they deserve to be seen, so I hope people do come.”

Augelli said he’s looking forward to the game, though the 700th career win is secondary to improving Crosby’s standing in the NVL and state tournament brackets.

“You have two of the top teams in the NVL competing for bragging rights in the city,” Augelli said.

Augelli added: “Win streaks eventually come to an end and it would be nice to be the team to end the streak, but it is not a motivation. To get the win against a quality team like Sacred Heart is what we are striving for.”

As far as the two teams go, Sacred Heart has seen players like Caleb Sampson and Trevahn Duncan become more aggressive offensively to compliment the talented Lorenzo Washington. Washington had 38 points the first time the two teams met. Connor Tierney had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds in win No. 116 in a row against Woodland on Tuesday.

“Defensively we’re a little more aware of assignments,” Carroll said. “You always got to be aware of where Justin is, even when he doesn’t have the ball.”

Carroll added that Sacred Heart must do better at limiting Crosby’s second chances. The Bulldogs will go with their “starting eight”, as Augelli refers to his team. The leader of that group, of course, is senior standout Justin Davis. Davis tallied 21 points in the first meeting, but Jonathan Rivera and Alex Batista were only just returning to the lineup. Rivera can take the pressure off Davis with ball-handling duties, and Batista provides another strong body inside. The Bulldogs are an interchangeable group with several outside shooters and big men at their disposal.

“We have to go into the game with a lot of confidence, play our game, and we need to play better defense against them than we did in the first game,” Augelli said. “Playing at Sacred Heart also gives them an advantage with the home court.”

If you love high school basketball, then do yourself a favor. Better yet, do these players a favor, and get to Alumni Hall. Sacred Heart athletic director Mike Madden said the doors would open at 4 p.m., since there is no freshman game. There will still be the junior varsity game at 5:15, followed by the varsity at 7.

Important stretch ahead for Cheshire swim team; Pomperaug in solid shape

The Cheshire High boys swimming team has been idle since last Monday from competition after defeating Southern Connecticut Conference rival Amity of Woodbridge, 98-85, to remain undefeated in five league meets.

By MARK JAFFEE

But the Rams (6-1 overall, 1-0 SCC Division I) have been busy in recent days, sharpening their techniques and trying to lower their times in preparation for Monday night’s pivotal SCC meeting with visiting Fairfield Prep (3-1, 0-0 SCC Division at Cheshire Community Pool.

“Since the win over Amity, we have focused our work this week on great starts, breakouts and finishes with lots of work on bursts of speed,” said Cheshire coach Kevin Reeder. “We’re finally healthy. We had over 20 kids out sick for almost a week. It’s very good to have the entire team back together.”

The Jesuits are the defending SCC champion, as well as third as a team in the 2019 Class LL championship meet. Prep was also fifth overall at the 2019 State Open right behind Class M state champion and fourth-place finisher Pomperaug.

Cheshire High School swim coach Kevin Reeder. (RA)

“Fairfield Prep set the bar and to have a team like that in our conference is awesome,” said Reeder. “If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Prep always brings a strong team. I expect a very competitive meet Monday that could go down to the last relay.”

But the Rams won’t have time to relax after Monday as 24 hours later, they meet Xavier of Middletown (7-0, 1-0 SCC Division I) Tuesday at 7 at Wesleyan University’s Freeman Athletic Center.

“Tuesday will be an even tougher test against what I think is a top 3 team in the state in Xavier (7-0, 1-0 SCC Division I). They’re young, talented and swimming really fast.”

The Rams feature University of South Carolina-bound Sam Hanke, who was second in the 100 backstroke (51.80 seconds) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.46) at the 2019 CIAC Class L meet.

Hanke won the 200 freestyle (1:44.71) and 100 backstroke 52.70 seconds) at the 2019 SCC championship meet and was also second in the 100 backstroke (51.33 at the ’19 State Open).

Hanke is a senior tri-captain along with James Bennett and Nicholas Brunetti.

“Sam is doing well and we continue to work on what it will take to do what he wants at the end of the season,” added Reeder. “We are confident we will get there.”

The Rams’ only blemish this season was against defending FCIAC, Class LL and State Open champion Greenwich, a decisive 103-56 decision Jan. 18. But Reeder saw the positive side of that road meeting instead of dwelling on the loss.

“Swimming Greenwich was a great opportunity for these kids,” said Reeder. “It allowed our team to realize that while we may be a strong team, we’re a long way from being the best. Greenwich has a very deep talented team this year and proved they will be hard to beat this season.”

The SCC Diving championship is Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Sheehan-Wallingford. The swimming trials qualifier is set for March 2 at Cheshire Community Pool at 4:30 p.m. followed by the championship finals set for March 4 at 4:30 p.m. at Southern Connecticut State University’s Bruce Hutchinson Natatorium in New Haven.

Cheshire will then compete at the CIAC Class L meet March 17 (1:30 p.m.) at Wesleyan and at the State Open (March 21, 7 p.m.) at Yale University’s Kiphuth Exhibition Pool.

“Our goals aren’t accomplished or lost based on the results of next week,” said Reeder. “We’re looking ahead to our SCC meet. Class L and State Opens to judge how our season was. Our depth is our strength and what will allow us to reach our potential as a team. I believe the best for this team is ahead of us.”

Panthers’ update: Defending South-West Conference and defending Class M champion Pomperaug is 5-0 in league meets this season. Sai Quesenberry, Connor Nee and diver Christianna Tzepos are senior tri-captains.

Pomperaug will compete Saturday at 3 p.m. in a non-scoring multiteam meet [Dash] Hall-West Hartford, Amity-Woodbridge, Conard-West Hartford, Holy Cross, Suffield/East Windsor/Ellington/Windsor Locks at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford.

Pomperaug’s slate to date: def. New Fairfield, 94-78; def. New Milford, 97-78; def. Brookfield, 97-81; def. Barlow-Bethel, 85-57. The Panthers have a key nonleague meet next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Naugatuck at the Alex Gimbo Pool. Looking ahead, the Panthers will defend its SWC title Friday, March 6 at 5 p.m. at Masuk High in Monroe.

The following day, on March 7, the Panthers are set to go against Naugatuck again at 1 p.m.

Other dates include March 12: Class M Diving Championship at Bulkeley High-Hartford; March 14: Class M Trials at East Hartford High, 6 p.m.; March 18: Class M finals at Wesleyan, 6 p.m.
