Wolcott Tech’s Dziedzic achieves another 1st

$

By GERRY deSIMAS, JR. A year ago, Anton Dziedzic became the first Wolcott Tech wrestler to compete in a state final, falling to Woodstock Academy’s Graysen Deluca in Class M at 152 pounds.Anton DSC_1132
On Saturday, the senior achieved another first for the Wildcats’ program, becoming the first Wolcott Tech wrestler to bring home an outstanding wrestler award from a league championship tournament.
Dziedzic was the outstanding wrestler in the Constitution State Conference tournament at Ellis Tech in Danielson. Dziedzic won at 152 pounds, with two pins in a combined total of 54 seconds — good enough to earn the fast fall award, too.
With the addition of Bridgeport’s Warren Harding this fall, the CSC now has four teams so league champion Ellis Tech hosted the first CSC tournament since 2011. Ellis Tech easily won the tournament with 160½ points while Harding was second with 85 points. Wolcott Tech was third.
Dziedzic is one of five wrestlers left competing for Chris Marks’ squad at OWTS. Adam Green, who earned a medal at the Class M meet a year ago, tore up his knee a month before the season began.
Two other wrestlers had season-ending injuries during the season and another wrestler lost his eligibility due to poor grades.
Dziedzic is 32-2 this year, but feels he has been getting better as the year has progressed. He credits Marks, a former state champion at Northwestern. “He pushes me and keeps me focused on the state tournament and what I have to do to win it,” Dziedzic said.
Dziedzic’s title was the first league championship for Wolcott Tech since Todd Colitti (112) won a Berkshire League title in 2010.
The Class M championships are Friday and Saturday at East Haven High.

With five wrestlers finishing in the top four of their respective weight classes, Pomperaug finished fifth in the Southwest Conference – its eighth straight top five finish in the league tournament.
Matt Pangle (132) and Will Foschi (182) each finished second while Kyle Sheehan (126) was third. Michaela Quinn (113) and Joe Von Culin (145) each finished fourth.
Foschi, a senior, lost for just the second time this season in a 21-7 loss to State Open champion Anthony Falbo of Newtown. “He wrestled great against Falbo,” Pomperaug coach Tony Ryan said. Ryan said that Foschi is one of the few wrestlers this year that hasn’t been pinned or beaten by technical fall by Falbo. “It’s a huge confidence boost for (Foschi),” Ryan said
Foschi and his Panther teammates will be competing in the Class L tournament at Bristol Central this upcoming weekend.
Pangle, a junior, lost to New Fairfield’s Avery Shay in the championship final at 138 pounds, 7-0. Sheehan (126) dropped just one match in the tournament in the semifinals to Newtown’s Aaron Occhipiniti. Sheehan pinned Masuk’s Tony Jaquim to finish third.
Quinn went 3-2 in the tournament to take fifth.
Cheshire coach Jake Dilts knew his senior-laden squad didn’t have enough bodies to be successful in dual meets. For much of the season, they were missing competitors to wrestle at 195, 220 and 285 pounds. So, he added three tournaments to the schedule.

“I wanted to give them the best opportunity to prepare for the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) tournament and Class LL championships,” Dilts said.
Yet, a core of in the middle of the lineup — seniors Owen Brown (120), Darren Barile (132), Matt Robidoux (138), Michael Marotta (152) and Joe O’Donnell (160) and junior Sean Black (132) and sophomore Jaycob Minihan (145) — helped the Rams win nine of their final 11 dual meets to finish 12-10.
At Saturday’s SCC championships, Black took third at 126 pounds, winning four of five matches.
Barile and Marotta each went 2-2 and finished fourth in their weight classes. “All of the kids who placed beat kids they lost to earlier in the year,” Dilts said. “They came back and wrestled tough.”
Cheshire finished 10th at the SCC championship meet.
Housatonic sophomore Will Fallon, who wrestled at 170 pounds at the Berkshire Valley Invitational and went 1-2, is the last of the Mountaineers. Two others became ineligible due to grades.
It’s been a challenge to stay prepared throughout the season. Fallon and coach Joshua Morey still work out in a corner of the Housy cafeteria. Plenty of students see them working out as they pick up an afternoon snack, but few have joined them to compete.
Morey and Fallon have also been working out with the Northwestern, Hotchkiss and Salisbury School squads.
Fallon hasn’t placed in any tournaments so far. He has followed the same schedule as Northwestern this season and the Highlanders were not shy about wrestling larger schools. Housatonic has had a wrestling program since 1970.

Booker lifts Crosby over Wilby

By JOE PALLADINO It is one of the fundamental laws of nature: When Crosby and Wilby play a boys basketball game, the fans will be on their feet cheering at the end.
And so it came to pass Tuesday night at the Reggie O’Brien Gymnasium. Crosby won it, 69-68, in a wonderful, wild, loose, crazy gem of a game.
This wasn’t a game for the basketball purists. The purists can stay home. The teams dashed up and down the floor, tossed it away, took some ill-advised shots, made some hopeless passes, but also put on one heck of a basketball show.
Thanks, guys. Everyone, except the coaches, loved it.
The game-winning basket for Crosby came on a Jordan Booker 3-point field goal, which also happened to be the hoop that put the senior guard over 1,000 points for his career.
It wasn’t quite as dramatic as it sounds. The hoop came with 1:54 to play, but it was the last field goal and the final points of the evening. After that, there were missed free throws, missed layups and too many turnovers to count. That’s OK. The more pandemonium, the better.
Crosby led big, Wilby rallied, Crosby wilted, Wilby wilted, Crosby found its game, Wilby rallied some more and, ultimately, we make room in the city archives for another beaut.
“We just had to grind it out,” Booker said. “It was a big win for us. Coach told us it was going to be a big game.”
Crosby (14-3) has only lost three times: twice to Sacred Heart (but that’s life in the 2015-16 season) and once to Wilby. It was a game that Crosby wanted back.
“Ever since I have been in high school, it has been a rivalry with us,” said Crosby’s Dan Jones, who had 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals. “It is just an intense game. It is always that type of game.”
Jeremiah Kendall had 14 points and nine boards, and Dayquan Sinisterra scored 10 for the Bulldogs.
But Crosby had the same kind of trouble that everyone in the league has with Wilby center Damian Grant. He had another big night with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while the 6-foot-10 man in the middle, Shawn Coles, added 13 boards, eight points and five blocks for Wilby (12-6).
The Wildcats clawed back into a game that was all but over for them early, thanks to 18 points from Jerquan Smalls, including three hoops late in a quick fourth-quarter spurt. There was a stunning dunk by Dimitri Yates, too, and seven points, four assists and three steals from Christian Harris.
But Booker was the man. He hit seven 3-pointers, including treys on back-to-back Crosby possessions in the third quarter, and the ultimate hoop at the end.
On Wilby’s final possession, a Smalls desperation shot missed, the buzzer sounded, and Crosby and Wilby had done it again.
Did we say thank you? OK, we’ll say it again. Thanks. Maybe we’ll get to see it again in the Naugatuck Valley League tournament.

Must see: When the clock stopped working at Kennedy …

Tuesday night at the Taglia Gym some innovation was needed.

The clock at Kennedy stopped working between the JV and varsity games, so the announcer used his phone as a timer, they wrote down the score on a whiteboard, the score and time were announced from time to time on the PA, and the announcer, Phil Alberto, was the “horn” at the end of each quarter. Kennedy won, 76-71, over Bridgeport Central.
