Taft’s unblemished start halted by Berkshire
By KEVIN ROBERTS
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
WATERTOWN — Taft boys soccer has been off to a terrific start this season, and that great beginning almost continued in the rain Wednesday afternoon at home against the Berkshire School.
Almost. Berkshire held off a frenetic attack from Taft, but was able to secure a 3-2 victory.
The Big Red faced an early deficit, but were able to pull to within 3-2 with 13:03 to play in the second half. Taft tried to tie the game, and seemed to hit every part of the goal frame while attempting to pull even. The Big Red had their chances.
After the game, despondent Taft captain Sammed Bawa sprawled on the field in front of the Berkshire goal. An opponent and teammates took turns trying to pick Bawa up off of the wet grass, but the midfielder wouldn’t budge. Berkshire is the defending New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class A champion, but Taft battled them until the end. The game meant a lot to the Big Red, and losing it hurt.
“It’s definitely disappointing to feel like you’re that close, especially given that we haven’t been able to beat this team in a number of years,” coach Ozzie Parente said. “You feel like it’s there and everything was right, and I’m sort of at a loss for words that we couldn’t pull it out at the end.”
Bawa scored a goal for Taft, as did James Donaldson. Donaldson scored off a corner kick to cut the gap to 3-2. Parente said he doesn’t feel like the Berkshire loss will keep the team down long, and it shouldn’t. The Big Red were 7-0 coming into the game.
“It’s interesting because it may not even be the most talented team that we’ve ever had, but the boys really believe in themselves, they believe in each other,” Parente said. “There’s a really great camaraderie, there’s a really good feeling amongst the group, so I think that’s really spurred us on to some positive results in the early going.”
Left back Ethan Hindle is a captain along with Bawa. Both are part of the Class of 2020. Bawa is a dynamic player and leader on the offensive side of the field, and Hindle anchors the defense on the other side. The cohesion that they bring is important given that Taft is a younger team.
“I think we’re starting two sophomores, and a lot of sophomores are playing,” Parente said. “So really, with a younger group, the whole senior class, but in particular those two, have been fantastic.”
Taft boasts local players Charlie Shanks of Litchfield, Nick Kenerson of Watertown and Christopher Murphy of Southbury. Shanks is a class of 2020 forward, Kenerson is a 2021 back, and Murphy is a 2021 goalkeeper. Class of 2022 midfielders Zobran Elias and Kelvin Baffour bring a ton of speed to the pitch. Baffour could be seen defending aggressively on one end of the field against Berkshire, but just as quickly he was leading the charge down the other end of the field.
There’s plenty of talent on the field for Taft, and with the camraderie that they already possess, the Big Red are poised to continue their standout season.

WCA defense makes stand to preserve win over Torrington
By KEVIN ROBERTS
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
WATERBURY – WCA senior Giovanni Rodrigues flew in from the right side of Torrington’s offensive line, and quarterback Conrad Avallone didn’t have a chance.
Rodrigues sacked Avallone on fourth down from the Spartan 35-yard line to end a final Raider comeback attempt. WCA (4-1) took a knee and celebrated a 19-17 victory over Torrington (3-2).
Rodrigues had a busy day before making the big play on Avallone.
“Gio, he actually works. He leaves school at 10:30, 11 o’clock, goes to his job,” WCA coach Pete Flammia said. “He got here at 3 o’clock from work, got taped up and played. For him to make that play is unbelievable. He’s just an awesome kid. Four-year starter, he’s just a great kid.”
Torrington trailed WCA, 19-7, with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Jacob Coleman (20 carries, 107 yards) scored from 14 yards out, then ran in the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 19-15.
Torrington recovered the ensuing onside kick and had the ball at its own 46 with 4:30 to play. WCA forced a three-and-out and a punt, but Torrington punter Sean Clinkscales boomed a 48-yard kick, helped out by a friendly bounce and roll, which pinned the Spartans at their own 11.
WCA senior standout Jalen Gopie (20 carries, 110 yards, touchdown) lost 2 yards on the first play, then had to dive on his own fumble at the Spartan 3 on the next play.
“They did a nice job on defense on stopping our big guy, Gopie,” Flammia said. “He didn’t really get out in the open at all, and they did that to us last year, too.”
After an incomplete pass forced a punt, WCA had punter Gary Gega take a safety rather than punt from the end zone. The score was 19-17 with 1:05 to play, and the Raiders had a final shot to win it.
Torrington’s Tyler Semonich returned the kickoff 22 yards to the WCA 33. That’s where the Spartan defense clamped down on the Raiders. An incompletion was followed by a loss of 2 yards. The Raiders were forced to spike the ball on third down to stop the clock. That set up the big sack by Rodrigues.
“Whenever they would run left or right, the ‘A’ gap would kind of open up, and that was the play,” said Gopie, a stalwart defender who is being looked at as a linebacker in college.
“He cuts down half the field, and I put him in the middle of the field today,” Flammia said.
WCA led, 13-7, at halftime on a pair of touchdown passes. Julio Toro and Darrell Coombs connected for a 40-yard touchdown with 5:03 left in the second quarter. The Spartans later ran a reverse and Joshua Ross Jr. hit Coombs for a 45-yard touchdown.
“He went up for the ball,” Flammia said. “That’s what we’ve been waiting for him to do for four years, and he did it today. What a game for him to finally do it in.”
Dillon Hargrove scored on an 11-yard run in the first half for Torrington. Gopie’s 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter put the Spartans ahead, 19-7.
“It was a great game, a two-point difference,” Raiders coach Gaitan Rodriguez said. “The mistake that we made early on, they bit us. That little reverse pass scored before the half is looming on us right now, but these kids played their heart out.”
