WINSTED — Northwestern High girls basketball coach Fred Williams spelled out two objectives for his team against Lewis Mills in Tuesday’s matchup of Berkshire League preseason favorites: Hold the Spartans under 10 points per quarter and limit Mills sharpshooter Sammi Chadwick to 15 points or less.
Check. Double check.
The Highlanders shut down Mills while heating up themselves in the second half to roll to a 38-24 victory.
“We met those two challenges, obviously,” Williams said. “We didn’t dazzle anybody, but we played hard.”
Emma Propfe had 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals, and her defense was one big reason Chadwick scored seven points, one game after she hit six 3-pointers in a 28-point effort against Thomaston.
“We had one person on her all the time,” Propfe explained. “We played tight on her and made sure she didn’t get the ball. If she did get the ball, we made sure she wasn’t able to get open threes.”
Northwestern (3-0) survived even after Natalie Lederman, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, went to the bench with four fouls less than two minutes into the third period.
Propfe responded by converting a steal into a layup for a 20-12 lead. Skylar DiMartino’s layup off an inbounds pass gave the Highlanders their first double-digit lead, 24-14, with 3:30 to go in the period.
“Everyone really knows when Natalie comes out of the game,” DiMartino said. “We all know we have to step up even harder to push ourselves more.”
Brianna Pelchar led Mills (2-1) with eight points.

With a full schedule of games there were plenty of strong performances Tuesday night in high school basketball.

Some games that caught our eye:

  • The Torrington boys beat Holy Cross by 31 points, which has to be the most ever in that series.
  • How about Wolcott opening with a pair of boys wins over city schools, beating Wilby Tuesday night?
  • Lewis Mills topped Northwestern in the best Berkshire League game of the night.
  • The Derby girls earned a nice win with a victory over Kennedy.
  • In Watertown, the Indians moved to 3-0 with a NVL win over rival Woodland.
  • And in the BL, both Gilbert and Housatonic have shot out of the gate and are 4-0 this season (they don’t meet until Jan. 8).

Here are the top scoring games of the night:

Boys basketball notes: Raiders rely on senior star; Woodland senior starts fast

BY MARK JAFFEE

As a three-year starter, Torrington High senior swingman Joel Villanueva has become a steadying influence for the Red Raiders’ boys basketball team.

The 6-foot-2 Villanueva also has become a primary scoring threat, although Torrington does have a balanced team with the likes of Dontae Thomas, Tyreek Davis and Kevin Dixon, all seniors, according to Raiders coach Eric Gamari.

“We are pretty structured and share the ball well,” noted Gamari.

On Tuesday, Villanueva scored a game-high 25 points, 21 in the second half, in the Red Raiders’ dominating 90-59 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday.

But he also drew two first-quarter fouls, which limited his minutes to less than 10 in the first half, when he scored only four points. By the second half, Villanueva returned to the court, scoring nine points in the third quarter. With the game in command, he added 12 fourth-quarter points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.

“Joel just fits into what we do,” said Gamari. “He’s pretty level-headed and just goes out and plays hard. He has really worked on his shooting technique and form.”

Gamari said Villanueva is regularly at the Torrington YMCA by 5:30 a.m. to hone his skills.
Would you classify him as a playmaker, a scorer or just well-rounded?

“Joel is all of the above,” said Gamari. “He doesn’t do anything flashy, but he’s consistently working on his game to get better. Especially his outside shot, which has improved a lot from last year.”

Last season, he scored a career-high 27 points against Wolcott.

The Red Raiders (1-1) host Naugatuck tonight at Connie Donahue Gymnasium.

Senior sensation: Woodland guard Zack Bedryczuk is making the most of his senior year on the hard court. The Southern Connecticut-bound baseball player converted six 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 21 points for the Hawks’ in a 70-44 win over Watertown in Beacon Falls on Tuesday.

In the Hawks’ 106-59 loss to Crosby, Bedryczuk scored a team-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

“Zach has been squaring his shoulders and stroking pretty good,” said Woodland coach Tom Hunt. “He’s been able to get in the right spots and getting good looks. His teammates are working to get their captain and team leader the ball, and he’s knocking the shots down.

“Against Watertown, his teammates did a good job of finding him in transition,” said Hunt. “Against Crosby, they were able to penetrate in the paint and then kick the ball out to him. He does whatever the team needs him to do.”

Bedryczuk, forward Mickey Meier and center Justin Marks are the only seniors on Woodland’s roster. Marks is sidelined after fracturing his pelvis while playing on the football team in early November. While Marks is healing, when he will get medical clearance to return to the court is still undecided.

Woodland will play at St. Paul in Bristol tonight and at Holy Cross Friday night.

In midseason form: After just two games, 6-foot-6 senior forward Kerwin Prince of Crosby has scored 62 points, a 31 ppg. average, well above his 19.2 ppg. average last season.

This season, he also has 25 rebounds, a 12.5 average, just a shade over his 12 ppg. mark in 2017-18. On Tuesday, Prince scored 29 points with 10 rebounds in an 86-56 win over St. Paul. Last Friday in the season opener, Prince scored 33 points with 15 rebounds in a 106-59 win over Woodland.

“Kerwin runs the court well, is a strong rebounder and plays good defense,” said Crosby coach Nick Augelli. “He’s very smooth inside, but also can step outside for jumpers. He can also lead the break.”

The Bulldogs play a nonleague game at East Hartford on Friday.

Double the fun: Wolcott basketball teammates Jack Drewry and Jeffrey Nicol are also batterymates on the diamond, Drewry as the left-handed ace and Nicol as catcher.

On the hard court, Drewry scored 13 points with 15 rebounds in the Eagles’ 62-28 win over Wilby on Tuesday. Nicol went a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul, including seven free throws in the second quarter.

Nicol is headed to play baseball at Central Connecticut in the fall while Drewry is joining Woodland’s Bedryczuk at Southern. Two more of their baseball teammates, Trey Nastri and Brett Adams, have committed to Eastern Connecticut, coached by Terryville native Brian Hamm.

WOODBURY – Nonnewaug High wrestling coach Dave Green likes what he has seen from his team just over a week into the season. The Chiefs split their first two matches and won the Mike O’Keefe Holiday Tournament hosted by Pomperaug High last Saturday.

“We won our first tournament and we were the smallest team there,” Nonnewaug senior Benjamin Niez-Chaset said. “That really showed we are a small team, but we put it together nicely. We’re not scared of anyone.”

For a roster that went through some turnover from last season, Green is encouraged by how motivated everyone on the team – from the returning upperclassmen to the young, new wrestlers – is driven to keep improving.

[This post contains video, click to play]

“They want to get better,” Green said before a 45-24 win over St. Paul on Wednesday. “They work hard in practice with very little motivation from my end. They are a self-motivated group, so they’re really fun to be with. We’re very lucky as the three coaches, (assistants) John Lawless, Robert DeJoseph and myself, right now we’re really enjoying the team.”

Green is focused on seeing his wrestlers improve over the course of the season, more than wins and losses against other teams. He expects Nonnewaug to be in the middle of the Berkshire League pack with Gilbert as the favorites and Northwestern providing stiff competition (the Highlanders beat the Chiefs in the season-opener), while Terryville and the Thomaston-Litchfield-Holy Cross co-op are also up-and-coming programs.

“We just want them to improve and that’s going to be different (for each wrestler) because there’s some guys that have ideas of making it to the Opens and other guys that just hope to win a couple of matches,” Green said. “That’s our goal, to get them to achieve their goals.”

Of course, the competitive spirit driving all the Nonnewaug wrestlers has each of them focused on team and individual BL titles along with good showings at states.

“The goal is for team is to place No. 1 in BLs and for myself to place No. 1 in BLs and states,” junior Jack Cronin said. “There’s a lot of tough kids in the Berkshire League. They know what they are doing, but you just got to outsmart and out-technique them.”

Green commended Niez-Chaset, Cronin, senior Flori Cenkolli and sophomore Tommy Verdiglione as the returning place-winners and their ability to help wrestlers like Ethan Dzafer, Masen Williamson, Justin Noel, Conner Vincent and Jordan Carney step up into new roles.

“That’s kind of the process, trying to get them to figure out how much responsibility they have to take and right now they are stepping up to that,” Green said. They’re recognizing with the leadership helping everyone to realize that you have to prepare, we will help you, but you’re the one that really has to fix it and get it done.”

Verdiglione (120), Colden Williamson (126), Cronin (182) and Cenkolli (195) each finished first in their class at the Mike O’Keefe Holiday Tournament and four more finished in third. Host Pomperaug had winners in Joey Mastroianni (106) and Ben Bova (170). Those are results the Chiefs can build upon heading into 2019.

“I think the team is great this year,” Cenkolli said. “We’re a very well-conditioned team. Everybody is working their hardest, putting in the time. Everyone is here every day. I think this is going to be a good team for Nonnewaug.”
