With the holidays behind us the high school sports schedule returns to normal. In what will be a weekly feature for the remainder of the season, here are 5 events worth watching (and attending) this week:
Tuesday
Shepaug at Wamogo, girls basketball
Not too often that these two teams get prime billing on a busy hoops night, but this is a different year and different teams. Both are 4-2 on the season with some impressive wins, and then there is the family connection.
Shepaug’s Caroline Kelly (21.5 ppg.) and Wamogo’s Rose Kelly (12.3 ppg.) are cousins. Should be a fun night.
Wednesday
Watertown-Pomperaug at Cheshire, hockey
It’s still early in the hockey season for these teams, but this is a sneaky good rivalry that will renew itself at Wesleyan University’s rink. Check this out and you will be amazed at the skating ability of these high school players.

Friday
Kennedy at Sacred Heart, boys basketball
It will be hard this winter to make up a list of top events and not include the Hearts at least once. It’s a busy week for the state’s top-ranked team with three games on the schedule. But this is the one that will attract attention with a determined Kennedy squad eager to push the Hearts to the limit. It should be city basketball at its best.
Immaculate at Pomperaug, girls basketball
Both teams figure to be factors in the SWC race this season. The Panthers (5-2), who are receiving votes in the state media poll, are led by Lauren Rubinstein (13.4 ppg.) and Karli Opalka (12.7 ppg.).

Saturday
Lawless Invitational at Nonnewaug, wrestling
The annual wrestling tournament named after the founder of the program at the school features some of the best grapplers in the state. It is a respected tournament that runs most of the day in Woodbury.
Pomperaug invitational at Pomperaug, gymnastics
OK, we snuck in a sixth event since it is also noteworthy. Not far away from the Lawless wrestling extravaganza at Pomperaug High it will be a full day of gymnastics with some of the best gymnasts from many schools competing.
