No one needs to remind the Eagles about the NVL tournament of 2016. They played the Crusaders in the first round last year too, and lost. “Yeah, we were talking about it on the bus (Tuesday) night,” said Wolcott first-year coach Marty DiTuccio.
Holy Cross is the favorite as tournament opens. “We are excited to be the No. 1 seed, and very proud of our undefeated NVL regular season,” said Cross coach Frank Lombardo.
What’s notable about Cross is that everyone plays, and plays well.
“We have been fortunate to be able to play many players this year,” Lombardo added. “With the increased playing time, many players have improved tremendously.”
There is one question NVL opponents certainly want answered: Will injured Cross star Century McCartney return for the tournament? Lombardo said that McCartney has not been ruled out, but she also still awaits medical clearance from off-season knee surgery
The 1 vs. 8 game is interesting because these teams love to play defense.
“We really have become a down and dirty team,” DiTuccio said. “We are not high scoring, but dependent on holding teams down on the defensive end.”
