It was quite a first week of the year in high school basketball. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights:

Tuesday
- On a rainy day, two roofs at city schools were leaking, forcing delays. At Holy Cross, an intrepid crew patched the leak with towels and duct tape and the Sacred Heart game against the Crusaders went on after the “rain delay”. At Waterbury Career, such a fix was unavailable and the WA game against Crosby was postponed (more on that in a bit).
- Tyairus Sands hit the game-winning floater in the lane as time expired to lift the Kennedy boys basketball team to a 76-75 victory over Wilby in each team’s NVL Brass Division opener. Christian Harris had hit two free throws with 3.2 seconds left to give Wilby a 75-74 lead. Sands took the ensuing inbounds pass and drove into the lane for the game-winner. Sands finished with eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
Wednesday
- How about 248 points and 3 OTs? That was what Crosby and WCA produced in the rain-delayed game that became an instant classic.
Friday
- How about the night that Naugatuck’s Shane Swierbitowicz had in a win over Woodland? The senior had 31 points and 14 rebounds.
- And then there was the high-scoring duo of Derby’s Anna Chevarella (34 pts.) and Amelia Carloni (17 pts.), who combined for 51 of their team’s 54 points in a win over Oxford.
