WATERBURY — Early Sunday evening, hours after tables and chairs were folded and the tents taken down following the completion of the Roberto Clemente World Series, another meeting was held at Municipal

Stadium. This time it was the Mickey Mantle people.

More than 50 volunteers jammed into an upstairs meeting room across the hall from the Stadium press box to go over last minute details in preparation for the start of World Series No. 2 in the city’s thrill-packed, back-to-back-to-back, Serious Summer of Series Hosting.

Clemente is done, Mantle is next, and then the Stan Musial World Series comes to town in August. The first wave has crashed upon the shore in the form of the Clemente Series, a very manageable event of eight teams all hosted at one site.

Ah, but now comes the Mickey Mantle World Series, which begins Wednesday with 12 teams, at three locations, and with as many as 34 baseball games on the schedule, not to mention a parade and fireworks show too.
